About this Painting:
LookThe ancient city of Bamyan stands among the most treasured historical and cultural symbols of Afghanistan, with a heritage that stretches back more than 5,000 years. Nestled within its majestic cliffs once stood the monumental Buddhas of Bamyan, extraordinary masterpieces carved into the mountains during the 6th century CE. These magnificent sculptures were known as Salsal, the Great Buddha, rising to a height of 55 meters, and Shamama, the Smaller Buddha, standing 38 meters tall.
For centuries, these timeless monuments reflected the devotion, artistry, spirituality, and cultural richness of the Indigenous people of the region, especially the Hazara community of Afghanistan. They were not only remarkable achievements of human creativity, but also enduring symbols of peace, identity, and coexistence that welcomed thousands of visitors and admirers from around the world each year.
In 2001, these irreplaceable cultural treasures were tragically destroyed by the Taliban in an act that deeply wounded the shared heritage of humanity. Today, only the silent niches carved into the mountains remain, powerful reminders of what once stood there. Yet even in their absence, the spirit and memory of these monuments continue to draw thousands of visitors annually, inspiring reflection, remembrance, and hope.
This painting captures the remaining niche of the Great Buddha, Salsal, during the quiet beauty of winter in Bamyan. The reference photograph used for this artwork was taken by a local photographer, and permission for its use has been respectfully obtained.
